Construction has started on Everleigh’s $10 million dollar AFL field, which is set to provide our residents and the wider Logan community with new opportunities to participate in one of Australia’s most popular sports.
The 5.5 hectare Everleigh AFL Oval has been designed in partnership with Logan City Council and AFL Queensland and will include a full-sized field and warm-up oval. The new grounds will be ready for the first bounce in late 2022, with plans for a clubhouse still in the works.
We were honoured to host Logan Division 11 Councillor Natalie Willcocks, Logan Deputy Mayor Jon Raven, AFL Queensland Facilities and Government Manager Cobey Moore, Mirvac Queensland General Manager Residential Warwick Bible, Logan MP Linus Power and Jordan MP Charis Mullen here earlier this month to turn the first sod on the facility.
Mirvac Queensland General Manager Residential, Warwick Bible, says the AFL Oval will form part of Everleigh’s 25 hectare sports and recreation precinct — co-located with the new Everleigh State School, due to open January 24.
“These fields are the first stage of what will become one of the region’s most significant sport and recreation precincts and it has been fantastic to work alongside Council and AFL Queensland to ensure a top-class design,” says Mr Bible.
“Facilities such as these play such an integral role in developing community and we see the fields, and the broader precinct, becoming a place for people to come together – to enjoy a game, or simply kick a ball with family and friends.
“We’ve purposefully designed Everleigh so amenities like the AFL Oval, soon-to-open State School and parkland are easily accessible and we hope to see residents from across Logan experiencing them.
“Everleigh is already home to more than 165 households and with the Flagstone Priority Development Area continuing to experience strong growth, delivering high-quality spaces is so important as more people move to the region.”
Cr Willcocks says the Everleigh AFL Oval will support local players and the region’s growing population. “AFL has the highest participation rate amongst juniors in Queensland. However, until now, Division 11 hasn’t had AFL fields,” says Cr Willcocks.
“The addition of new sporting fields, and eventually a sporting precinct, will increase opportunities for residents to access a range of new facilities that will promote active and healthy lifestyles.
“Not only is the Council and myself committed to supporting active and healthy lifestyles across the City of Logan, but we are big believers in creating space where locals can come together and build a stronger community.
“It’s great knowing that the facility is coming soon to the Division, and I can’t wait for the first bounce!”
AFL Queensland Facilities and Government Manager, Cobey Moore, says developing new sporting infrastructure in the community plays a vital role in fostering and supporting AFL participation in Logan.
"We want to see facilities developed across the region that deliver a great experience for our players, fans and officials," says Mr Moore.
“It is essential to get the facilities right, as they are crucial in helping clubs attract and retain players, as well as getting the community healthy and active.
"Everleigh AFL Oval has been a terrific opportunity for AFL Queensland to partner with Mirvac's Everleigh and Logan City Council to deliver new facilities to the community. "
